Tank Gauging System (Sensors) Overview

Basic Equipment / Component

Whereby extremely short microwave impulses are emitted by the antenna system to the measured product, reflected by the product surface and received again by the antenna system. The time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the level in the vessel. With a deviation of +/- 2mm it is by far the most accurate tank gauging system.

The pressure measuring principle is by means of electro-pressure transmitter continuously measures the ullage pressure inside the tank. Each transmitter type is specifically selected/calibrated. The feedback signal of 4~20mA from the transmitter is proportional to the tank ullage/vapor pressure level.

2 measuring points per sensor assembly – “Senmatic” is commonly used otherwise its equivalent. Platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs) offer excellent accuracy over a wide temperature range (from -200 to +850 °C).

Standard Sensors are available from many manufacturers with various accuracy specifications and numerous packaging options to suit most applications. Unlike thermocouples, it is not necessary to use special cables to connect to the sensor. The principle of operation is to measure the resistance of a platinum element.

An independent high level alarm is provided for all tanks in accordance with class rules. An independent overfilling (95 - 98%) detection alarm system shall be installed for cargo tanks, slop tanks, fuel oil tank P/S and MDO tanks totally segregated from the level monitoring system. Presentation and handling of the 95 - 98% alarms shall be done via an alarm panel mounted on the Tank Gauging Unit and repeated on the workstation monitors.

Relay outputs for additional alarm horns and alarm lights shall be available on request. The overfill alarm and the cargo ullage monitoring are integrated into Tank Gauging Unit panel, but shall work totally independent.

Pneumatic system is used as standard for ballast tank level gauging. The principle of operation is based on the measurement of the hydrostatic pressure by providing a constant low flow of air or neutral gas into a probe which opens at the tank bottom. The output pneumatic signal of the modulator is fed into P/I converter and is changed to electric signal (4-20mA) in 2 wire by P/I converter.

The electric output signal (4-20mA) will be connected & captured at Processing Cabinet & subsequently relayed to Tank Gauging Workstation for monitoring & controlling. The presentation of the tank level is displayed graphically at the computer color display screen.

Other than the two aforementioned system, hydrostatic pressure transmitters are used for tank level gauging of smaller tanks.
